A woman receives news of her father’s disappearance. She returns to the desert to search for him, only to find the shared echo of her childhood with her brother Julián.

KNOW THE STORY

When Lia, a musician who built her life far from the desert where she grew up, receives news of her father’s disappearance, she returns to the family ranch only to find no body, no answers, and a brother worn down by years of holding everything together. Forced to coexist after a long separation, Lia and Julián embark on an uncertain search through the traces their father left behind: maps, objects placed out of time, and a presence that seems to breathe within the landscape itself. As they move deeper into the desert, a place where memory folds and the past feels half-alive, their contradictory childhood recollections begin to surface. What starts as the search for a missing man becomes a confrontation with what they’ve avoided for years: the fractures of their family, the distance they’ve allowed to grow, and the versions of their father they each needed to survive. The desert, more consciousness than backdrop, responds in ways neither of them expects. Signs appear where reason falters; echoes of the past blur with the present. In this space between the real and the liminal, Lia and Julián discover that the disappearance of their father is also a rupture in their own story. Their search leads them to an improbable corner of the desert where time seems suspended. Here, the siblings must face the possibility of finding, or losing again, not only their father, but also the fragile bond that still exists between them.

"We cried when we saw our photos. Somehow, Aoki managed to freeze every quiet, fleeting moment we didn’t even notice on the day. The images feel alive — gentle, raw, and deeply personal. They hold memories we’ll return to again and again."

"Aoki has a gift for seeing what others don’t — the in-between, the barely there, the real. These photos aren’t staged; they’re lived. I’ve never felt more seen in a picture. There’s truth in every frame, and that’s something rare."

"It was more than just a shoot — it felt like being understood. Aoki made space for us to be ourselves, and that trust shows in every frame. We’ll treasure these images for the rest of our lives. They remind us how it all felt, not just how it looked."

DIRECTOR´S STATEMENTS

Todo crece aquí was born from a shared wound, two losses that marked our lives differently yet led us to the same place. We both grew up surrounded by silences, fragmented memories, and grief that was never fully named. This film emerges not to settle accounts with the past, but to inhabit mourning without explanation, to explore its contradictions, and to understand how relationships erode and transform through what is left unsaid. The desert of Baja California Sur is not a setting. It is a living consciousness: a place where time stretches differently, and memory refuses to leave. One of us was born in this land; it shaped our earliest language and our first fracture. The other formed a connection through love, finding in this territory a quiet, unexpected sense of belonging. The landscape doesn’t frame the story; it breathes with it. Our previous work —from animated short films to intimate fiction- has consistently revolved around what remains unresolved: fragile childhoods, emotional absences, and nostalgia as an affective archive. Todo crece aquí continues and expands that search. It is not an individual vision, but a convergence of two voices that sharpen each other rather than merge. Our collaboration began as mentor and student, and has grown into a creative partnership rooted in trust, friction, and deep mutual respect. We seek to bring Todo crece aquí to Talents Guadalajara because we feel it is time to open the project to honest dialogue, to let it be questioned, challenged, and strengthened before it becomes a film. We aspire to make an intimate story that brushes the universal: a film for those who are also seeking meaning in what is lost and in what, against all odds, remains. With excitement and honesty, Juan Carlos Reyes & Regina Rios
